Springfield's mix of Victorian mansions near the Capitol, solid brick bungalows, and wide mid-century ranch streets all share one thing: driveways that take a beating from Central Illinois winters and the soft prairie silt loam underneath. Decatur Asphalt Paving has been serving Springfield and the surrounding area since 2016, and we know exactly what a driveway faces out here in Sangamon County.

Whether you're dealing with spring potholes after the freeze-thaw cycle, a sunken apron that pools water after rain, or a parking lot that's starting to fail, we're local, fully insured, and we give you an honest assessment before we quote a price. We're based in Decatur, just 38 miles west, and we've built our reputation on straightforward work and real tonnage specs on every estimate.

Asphalt Paving in Springfield (62701)

Springfield's neighborhoods run the full timeline of American residential building. You've got the tight Victorian lots in the historic districts near the Capitol, where a driveway has to fit into a narrow footprint and snowplow access is tight. Then there are the brick bungalow blocks built for the railroad and industrial workers, with moderate-length drives and good lot depth. Out toward the edges, the mid-century ranch belt has longer driveways, attached garages, and room to work. All of it sits on the same subgrade: deep black prairie silt loam over glacial till, rich soil that holds moisture like a sponge. That's why a proper aggregate base matters more here than it does in sandy or rocky ground. Without it, freeze-thaw heave cracks the asphalt, and spring meltwater works into any base that cannot drain.

We've been paving driveways, parking lots, and private roads across Decatur and into Springfield for over eight years. We know the soil, the drainage challenges, the snowplow season, and the lot layouts. We bring a paver and roller that fit Springfield's mix of tight urban lots and wider suburban drives, and we always start with a site visit to understand what's underneath before we write an estimate.

How a Job Works in Springfield

Call us at (217) 859-8789 or reach out online, and we'll schedule a free on-site assessment. We'll measure your driveway or lot, look at the existing pavement and base, check drainage and grading, and talk through what you need. If you're in an HOA or a historic district, we'll discuss any approval requirements upfront. We'll give you a written estimate with tonnage and thickness specs, not just a per-square-foot guess.

Once you approve, we'll handle the work itself. For a driveway, that means milling out the old asphalt if needed, prepping and compacting a stone base, and laying hot mix asphalt in lifts, compacted to density. For parking lots or private roads, the process is the same, scaled up. We work around your schedule and your property. If a curb cut, apron, or culvert permit is required by Springfield, we'll help you navigate that with the city.

We leave your property clean, with all debris removed and your driveway or lot ready to use. You'll get a final walkthrough so you know exactly what was done and what to expect as the asphalt cures over the next few months.

Pricing depends on square footage, the condition of the existing base, access for equipment, and how thick we need to build. A new residential driveway in Springfield typically runs from $6 per square foot for a straightforward install on good base, up to $7 per square foot for a full replacement where the base is compromised. Resurfacing an existing driveway, where the base is sound, starts around $4 per square foot. Repairs like pothole patching or a sunken apron start at $450, depending on size and depth. Parking lots vary widely based on size and condition, but we offer a free commercial estimate so you know what you're looking at. The key variables are always the same: how much square footage, what's underneath, how much base prep is needed, and how thick the asphalt has to be to handle your traffic and the freeze-thaw cycle. Call us at (217) 859-8789 with your measurements and a description of the problem, and we'll give you a ballpark range before we come out.

I live near the Capitol area in one of the older neighborhoods. My driveway is short and narrow, and I'm not sure there's room for a paver truck. Can you still do the work?
Yes. We work in the Victorian and historic districts regularly, and we have equipment that fits tight lots. If a full-width paver won't fit, we can hand-lay and finish the asphalt, or we can mill and remove the old surface first to make room. We'll assess the access during the site visit and let you know what's practical. Some of those older lots are tight, but it's not a showstopper.
It's March, and my driveway has three new potholes. Can you come out this week?
Spring pothole season is our busiest time, and we do move fast once the ground thaws and we can work. Call us at (217) 859-8789 as soon as you see them, and we'll get you on the schedule. We can patch them to hold through the season, or if the damage is widespread, we can talk about whether resurfacing or replacement makes more sense. Either way, we'll get you a price and a timeline.
What's the difference between patching, resurfacing, and replacement, and when does each one make sense?
Patching is the right move for one or two potholes or a small failed section, and it costs the least. Resurfacing works when the base is still solid but the top layer is cracked or worn, usually from sun, traffic, and age. We mill off the old surface and lay new asphalt over the base. Replacement is necessary when the base itself has failed, you see alligator cracking across a large area, or the driveway is sunken and pooling water. As a rule, if more than thirty or forty percent of the surface is cracked or failed, patching throws money away and resurfacing or replacement is the better investment. We'll be honest about which one your driveway needs.
I'm planning to extend my driveway or add a new apron, and I think I need a permit. How do I find out what Springfield requires?
Springfield and the villages around it have different rules for driveway extensions, curb cuts, and impervious-surface limits. Start by contacting the City of Springfield's building or public works department, or check the official City of Springfield website for permit requirements in your area. Some extensions need a permit, some don't, and it depends on your lot size and the zoning. Before any excavation or grading, you'll also need to call Illinois 811 for a utility locate, which is required by law. We'll help you understand what the city needs once you call us.
I live in a homeowners association, and I'm not sure if my driveway color or material choice is allowed. What should I do?
Check your HOA's architectural guidelines or covenants first, because many HOAs set rules on driveway material, color, and width. Standard black asphalt is almost always approved, but if you're thinking about recycled millings or tar and chip, verify that with your HOA before we quote. We work with HOA rules regularly, and we're happy to coordinate with your HOA if approval is required. Property line issues and shared driveways are also governed by your HOA and local law, so we'll ask about those during the site visit.
Are you insured for work at my property?
Yes, we are fully insured. We carry general liability and workers' compensation coverage, so you and your property are protected while we work. Ask any contractor for proof of insurance before they start, and we're glad to provide it.
I just had my driveway paved. When can I seal it, and do I need to do anything special while it cures?
New asphalt needs time to cure and harden, usually six to twelve months, before you seal it. During that time, stay off the surface as much as possible in very hot weather, because fresh asphalt can soften in extreme heat. Don't park heavy equipment on it, and avoid sharp turns or hard braking if you can. Once it's fully cured, regular maintenance like filling small cracks will extend its life, but sealing isn't something we offer. A reputable sealcoating company can help with that once the cure period is over.
